Das neue Album von THE DEVIL & THE UNIVERSE wirbelt sich in die Gehörgänge der Zuhörer, schürt die Fantasie und nimmt sie mit. MERCIFUL NUNS – KVLTAN: the origin

„What if life did not originate on earth?“ – Mit dieser Frage eröffnet das 11. Album der MERCIFUL NUNS, das den ominösen Namen KVLTAN trägt. Artaud Seth, kreativer Kopf, Mentor und Visionär hinter der Band begleitet uns auf eine Reise an die Anfänge unserer menschlichen Zivilisation, an den Ursprung allen irdischen Seins. Warum existieren wir? Woher kamen wir? Was war oder könnte der „Missing Link“ zwischen einem einfachen, nativen Leben und den sich explosionsartigen entwickelten ersten Hochkulturen in Mesopotamien sein? Warum erzählen nahezu sämtliche späteren Weltreligionen von „Göttern, die aus dem Himmel“, dem Weltall, kamen, unabhängig voneinander entstanden und ohne jegliche Berührungspunkte der verschiedenen Kulturen? Und warum sind wir so fixiert darauf, dass intelligentes Leben hier auf der Erde seinen Anfang nahm? Was macht uns da so sicher? Um Antworten zu finden, muss man die richtigen Fragen stellen!

LA SCALTRA – Aussichten

Dae und Aeleth geben ein Update und reflektieren die letzten Monate. Die Bandformation hat ein neues Mitglied und das neue Album nimmt weiter Formen an. Sandy aka Saeda Moreau verließ die Band aufgrund neuer Projekte und ihren Platz am Bass übernahm Mike York (früher Sweet Ermengarde, Garden Of Delight u.a.). Bei Kerzenlicht und Kaffee stellen Dae Widow und Aeleth Kaven in einem gemeinsamen Interview ihre Pläne und Wünsche vor.

Wir haben ja mit der Pandemie turbulente Zeiten, auch gibt es für viele Kulturschaffende viele Hürden. Wie gehst du persönlich damit um?

WHISPERS IN THE SHADOW – GILDING THE LILY „Retrospektive ohne Retroklang“

Das letzte Mal als Solar Lodge Magazin mit Ashley Dayour über seine Rockband WHISPERS IN THE SHADOW sprach, betonte der Frontman mehrfach seine Abneigung gegenüber Nostalgie und Vergangenheitsverklärung. Ein Jahr danach, im vergangenen Herbst, veröffentlichten die Wiener ihr neues Album GILDING THE LILY (A Retrospective 1996 – 2021), auf dem sie auf 25 Jahre Bandbestehen zurückblicken. Gewann die nostalgische Stimmung doch noch die Oberhand? „Keinesfalls!“, lacht Ashley. „Dieses Jubiläum war einfach ein guter Anlass dazu, eine Veröffentlichung als Special Double Vinyl Gatefold herauszubringen.“

Während 25-jährige Jubiläen traditionell mit Silber assoziiert werden, zielen WHISPERS IN THE SHADOW zumindest mit der Titelwahl gleich auf eine Goldene Schallplatte ab, indem sie Lilien veredeln. Wie schon auf dem Vorgänger YESTERDAY IS FOREVER beweisen sie damit Sinn für Humor. Denn GILDING THE LILY heißt im übertragenen Sinn: übers Ziel hinausschießen, indem man etwas ohnehin Perfektes durch weitere Bearbeitung zerstört. Tatsächlich findet sich auch klanglich keine Spur von Vergangenheitsverklärung. Statt Altbekanntes neu zusammenzustellen, ging die Band zurück ins Studio, um einen Großteil der 21 Songs neu einzuspielen und abzumischen. Insofern zwinkert der Titel auch all jenen Ewiggestrigen zu, die alles Gute im früher verorten und die ursprünglichen Versionen für besser halten.

YOUR LIFE ON HOLD – „Echoes from the Bardo”

Many things, emotions, events, states of mind inspire us. Often these are the inspirations that we unconsciously experience at first through pictures, words, or encounters and that later return to our memories and thoughts and leave something lasting behind. Such as the question during an earthly life: “Why do we even love when we know that everything has to end?”

Jan, congratulations to your new fulltime album “Echoes from the Bardo”! You named it with: “the most personal record to date”. Please allow me to start with one last thought of your latest words in the last Solar Lodge interview in summer. “When making music, new ideas also spontaneously pop up. It all pretty much comes together while working on the songs. It’s like the pieces were already there, but at some point, you start seeing the general images of the puzzle.” Is the puzzle complete for your new album? Yeah, pretty much. It really feels good overlooking the whole project now. It all makes sense to me: the songs, the lyrics, the concept and the artwork. I never felt that complete finishing an album in fact. Now I hope people will like it as well, and I hope they will resonate with the underlying concept of the album. A funny thing though, once the puzzle is completed, the pieces start to change again and take new shapes. The perspective changes and gives me, even while being the writer of the puzzle, an exotic feeling.

NEAR EARTH ORBIT

What if, one day, foreboding turns into reality? What if no “reboot manual” were available for such an event? What if some unknown technology were employed in the manipulation of mankind? What if as a result the very foundation of our existence, planet Earth would become gradually misanthropic and uninhabitable? And what if we knew the timeline for the extinction event of all existence… 16th March 2034.

The observer is subjected to imagery probably never before entertained in one’s inner vision and consequently exposed to such vehemence, making it impossible to elude its maelstrom. The philosophically inspired SCORE of NEAR EARTH ORBIT demands the listener’s full attention as it abandons the constraints of space and time, encouraging cogitation. Who created the universe and what exactly is humankind’s role in it? And what will happen in the last few years before the end of the world? The SCORE defines 5 realistic threats for the apocalypse:

• meteor impact and alien invasion
• nuclear war
• artificial intelligence
• global warming
• interstellar travelling

WHISPERS IN THE SHADOW – „Das Offensichtliche liegt mir nicht“

Der Himmel ist wolkenverhangen und die überraschend warme Luft riecht nach verwesenden Blättern. Vereinzelt sieht man ein paar verkleidete Kinder auf den Straßen, aber im Jahr 2020 sind zum heutigen Halloween alle Menschen maskiert. Ich bin mit Ashley Dayour, Frontman und Mastermind von WHISPERS IN THE SHADOW, im weiträumigen Altwiener Cafè Schopenhauer zum Interview verabredet. Die Veröffentlichung des 10. Studioalbums YESTERDAY IS FOREVER steht unmittelbar bevor und ich habe einige Fragen. Wir lassen uns auf einer bequemen rot-beige-gestreiften Sitzgruppe nieder und ich lege die frisch gepresste CD zwischen uns auf den Tisch. Bei Cappuccino und Mohnkuchen kommen wir gleich zur Sache.

PROPHETEN DES UNTERGANGS

Die Realität hat die Fiktion überholt. „M.A.S.S. Extinction“ erscheint inmitten der Corona-Pandemie und ist – wenn auch unfreiwillig – der apokalyptische Soundtrack zum Coronavirus und gleichermaßen ein visionärer Blick in die Zukunft, auf all die Katastrophen, die noch kommen werden. Gedankenspiele mit Endzeitszenarien, die Warnung vor den von Menschen gemachten Katastrophen wie der Erderwärmung und die Vorahnung kommenden Unheils ziehen sich durch das gesamte Werk von NEAR EARTH ORBIT. Dass allerdings gerade jetzt „M.A.S.S. Extinction“ erscheint, ist auf beängstigende Art prophetisch. Wir sprachen mit Artaud Seth darüber, wie es ist, wenn Befürchtungen plötzlich Realität werden.

Welche Auswirkungen hat das auf unsere Bands, haben wir uns gefragt. Wie gehen sie damit um? Welche Pläne gibt es dem entgegenzuwirken? LAPIS EXILIS – Denial of all existence ?

Denial of all existence? All that has happened is senseless and in vain?
I would like to introduce for this new Solar Lodge issue beside our label bands the artist Lapis Exilis and his music and art. He joined the Solar Lodge convention in September 2019 and performed new songs from his current album “Nihil” which was self-published in August 2019.

Lapis Exilis, before I will ask you about your music: when dealing with you and your person there is fast a distinct impression. A multitalented guy. Ambitious, in-depth and ambitious. What are your sources, which “art career” can you briefly describe to us? Lapis Exilis: I just don’t let my lack of skill, experience or proper equipment Keep me from doing something when entering new territory, even though initial results might be terrible and usually are. With time and experimentation, results get better. There are a handful of people whose honest opinions I value very much and who are patient enough to take a look at my stuff from time to time. And there’s the net with lots of useful info, tutorials and inspiration to read and watch. So basically I try things and see if it works for me.
I’m not overly ambitious though. At least not anymore. I’m doing this thing, let’s call it art. If it takes me somewhere without having to compromise too much, that’s great, but I’m content either way.
